Gymnast Placement, State Qualifying & Move Up Scores

Gymnast Placement:

New JOGA athletes are to be placed according to their ability. Typically recreational gymnasts would start in JOGA 7. Gymnasts may move up to a higher level during a season and may not move down.

Existing JOGA athletes are placed according to their scores from the prior season. There is forced mobility. If a gymnast scores the states qualifying score to the next level three times during the season, then she is required to move up one level the following season. All sanctioned meets count, including Preview and States.  JOGA 6, 5, 4, and 3 athletes that score the Skip Level score three times during their season are required to move up two levels the following season (skip a level). The JOGA Statistician will notify any club that has an athlete who is scoring the skip level score, to encourage them to move up during the season instead of being forced to skip a level at the end of the season. An athlete is NOT required to move to level 2 until the season when their age at states is 11, and is NOT required to move to level 1 until age 12.

Qualifying Scores for States:
A gymnast must earn the States All-Around Qualifying Score, for their respective level, at two qualifying meets during the season. This includes the States Preview meet. For levels 1 & 2, a gymnast can qualify on individual events by earning the States Individual Events Qualifying Score on a given event(s) at two meets during the season.

Level 1 athletes that scores a 37.0 twice during the regular season, will be placed into the Level 1 Open group for States Preview & State Championships. The grouping has no age group. These athletes scores will count to your team score. If less than 6 gymnasts qualify into Level 1 Open, then they will be grouped with Level 1.
Age Groups:
For all meets including regular qualifier, Invitational or State Championship meets, age groups are at the
discretion of the meet host. The meet host should choose age groups that most evenly distribute gymnasts
based on the enrollment for a particular meet. The host club may consider using birth date ranges to
determine age groups. For example, if there are 30 level 6s, create 3 age groups of 10 gymnasts each called Jr,
Mid, and Sr, with the youngest 10 in Jr and the oldest 10 gymnasts in Sr.  An age group should never have fewer than 3 gymnasts unless there are less than 3 gymnasts at a particular level enrolled in the meet. Meet hosts may choose to use “current age” or “age at States” for athletes ages.

Age at States is determined using the Monday after States Weekend for their level.
